Following a catastrophic motorway collapse in Guangdong Province, south China, Chinese President Xi Jinping has issued crucial directives about rescue and disaster relief efforts.
Xi, who is also the chairman of the Central Military Commission and general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, gave the disaster a lot of attention and directed that all necessary measures be taken for the on-site rescue, medical care of the injured, and appropriate handling of the aftermath.
On May 1, at around 2:10 a.m., a landslip happened in Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, on the Chayang segment of the Meizhou-Dabu Motorway. The accident had resulted in thirty injuries and thirty deaths as of 6:00 a.m. on May 2.
In addition, all regions and relevant departments must adhere to bottom-line thinking, consolidate work responsibilities, strengthen monitoring and early warning, improve emergency plans, promptly investigate and deal with potential risks in key areas and key sectors, and ensure the safety of people's lives and property as well as the general stability of society. Xi stated that efforts should be made to repair the damaged roads and restore traffic order as soon as possible.
