Jamaica acquires additional 100 CNG buses from China

One hundred more new compressed natural gas (CNG) buses made in China will be delivered to the Jamaica Urban Transit Company Limited (JUTC) in July.

These will raise the total to 171 new buses that have been added to the public transport fleet since May 2023.

At the post-Cabinet press briefing held at Jamaica House on Wednesday, June 26, Hon. Daryl Vaz, Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications, and Transport, revealed this.

With the impending arrival of the new CNG buses, Minister Vaz said this influx into the system will enable the JUTC to deploy existing buses to other routes.

The entity will also be partnering with public passenger vehicle (PPV) operators to provide transportation services to underserved routes.

As of right now, the buses are a key component of public transport systems in Jamaica, having developed a strong foothold throughout China and reaching numerous international markets.

Jamaica has been working nonstop in recent years to create a more environmentally friendly public transportation system so that both locals and visitors can enjoy more comfortable and convenient transit options.
