Dominica PM to make official visit to China

Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, will visit China later this week as the two countries mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between them.

Skerrit told a news conference that he would be going to Beijing at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang of China's State Council from March 23-29.

“I think it is important to mark this occasion because there can be no argument that our partnership with China has resulted in significant benefits for Dominica,” he said.

The Dominican prime minister made reference to China's support in rehabilitating the island's infrastructure, rebuilding livelihoods, and providing lifesaving vaccines and health equipment to assist in the management of COVID-19.

“So, China has been good to Dominica, and I look forward to the opportunity to convey our gratitude to the leadership of China in the next few days,” he added.

Across the length and breadth of Dominica, he said, everyone can see the tangible investments in health, agriculture, education, and infrastructure development.

China's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian announced Wednesday that during Skerrit's official visit, he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other officials.

The two sides will have an in-depth exchange of views on bilateral relations as well as issues of common interest and draw up a blueprint for enhanced relations.

He will have talks, jointly attend the signing ceremony of cooperation documents, and also meet with the Chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee of China, Zhao Leji.

Lin said, "It is believed that Skerrit's visit to China will further enhance political mutual trust between the two countries, promote practical cooperation in various fields, consolidate the traditional friendship between the two countries, and push bilateral relations to a new level.”

China-Dominica relations have grown steadily, setting a good example of mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit, common development, and win-win cooperation between countries of different sizes.

China and Dominica formally established diplomatic relations in March 2004.
