Chinese embassy officials meet with FAO director general in Guyana

Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan, and her team have met with the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, Dr. Qu Dongyu.

During the meeting on Monday, the two sides discussed food security in the Caribbean and cooperation between FAO and the region.

Dr. Qu is attending the 38th FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean Ministerial Session in Georgetown, Guyana. This is the first time that FAO has held the regional conference in Guyana, and Ambassador Guo attended the opening ceremony.

Dr. Qu was re-elected to a second term as Director-General of the FAO last year. He became the first Chinese national to head the organisation when he was first elected in 2019.

He has championed a wide range of reforms and initiatives to overhaul the organisation’s business model, improving efficiency and implementing best practices that support programme and administrative effectiveness.

Dr. Qu has strongly advocated for the transformation of agrifood systems to make them more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient, and more sustainable, with the ultimate goal of helping members achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He was born in Yongzhou City in China's Hunan province in 1963. He was the Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China. Dr. Qu has worked in this area for more than 30 years, building up a wealth of experience covering policy planning, administrative management, reform and innovation, and international cooperation.
