Chinese ambassador attends Guyana’s El Niño response outreach

Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan, at the invitation of the Director General of the Guyana Civil Defence Commission (CDC), Nazrul Hussain, recently attended the El Niño Preparedness and Response Outreach to 5 primary schools in Guyana’s coastal region.

Ambassador Guo interacted with the teachers and students and presented souvenirs from China to the students. Meanwhile, Hussain and his staff members handed over water dispensers, fire extinguishers, and bottled water to the schools.

The CDC team also sensitised students to the impacts of the current drought and delivered short lectures on what El Niño entails and what people can do to save water resources and protect themselves.

The equipment distributed is financed by disaster prevention and mitigation funds sponsored by the Chinese government. China had generously donated US$100,000 to Guyana’s CDC.

Staff of the CDC, local government officials, school teachers, and hundreds of students attended.
