Chinese agriculture expert awarded by Dominica gov’t

Head of the Chinese Agricultural Mission in Dominica, Sun Haojie, has recently been bestowed with the Meritorious Service Award, one of the highest national awards in Dominica, for his 18-year commendable contributions to the country’s agricultural sector.

Having helped build the China-Dominica Modern Agricultural Centre and introduced high-value crops and relevant technical know-how to the island, Sun has been hailed as the “most popular person” by local farmers.

The China-Dominica agro-technical cooperation project is a public wellbeing project sponsored by the Chinese government and undertaken by the China-Xintian International Economic and Technical Cooperation Group.

Agricultural experts from both countries have worked closely, explored constantly, and made scientific plans to lay a solid foundation for the quality development of agriculture on the island.

Since the introduction of this programme in 2005, local agro-techniques have improved, and agricultural products have been enriched. Trials to introduce new varieties of fruits and vegetables have also been successful.

Through this joint China-Dominica project, numerous technical training sessions and farm machinery maintenance services have also been conducted.

Each year on November 3, the Meritorious Service Award is presented by the country’s head of state to persons who have rendered commendable service to Dominica. Sun was among 23 others who received a national award this year.
