Bahamas China Friendship Assn hosts Calligraphy & Wine Tasting event

The Bahamas China Friendship Association, in collaboration with Caribbean Wines & Spirit, held its second annual Calligraphy & Wine Tasting as part of its efforts to further improve connections between the Bahamas and China.

By holding its second yearly calligraphy sip and paint, the BCFS is attempting to introduce Bahamians to Chinese culture.

Participants learnt how to pronounce the numerous Bahamian sayings in Chinese by translating them into Mandarin during the session and then turning them into Chinese characters.

Donovan Moxey, President of BSFS, stated that the organization's 20th anniversary is being celebrated right before this event.

“Our calligraphy and our wine tasting event, and in particular, we're talking about we're actually doing activities around Chinese calligraphy that is being employed to to essentially, translate Bahamian phrases into Mandarin. And so we're really exploring the Chinese culture,” he said.

Moxey continued, “We're essentially Making it less intimidating for Bahamians to really understand the Chinese language and really get involved in what calligraphy is all about. So what we're doing is we're demystifying China, and we're making sure that people have a certain level of comfort around really engaging in those items or those activities that are specific to Chinese culture."

Caribbean Wines and Spirits, who worked with the BCFA on the occasion, provided a large assortment of wine for the attendees to enjoy.

Caribbean Wines and Spirits officials stated that they thought it would be appropriate for them to be involved in this event because they work with many Chinese individuals, many of whom are their customers, and they believe that the Bahamas China Friendship is a significant initiative.

Also present was John Garang, the recently appointed Chinese ambassador to the Bahamas, who interacted with the audience and gave gifts from his home country.
